May 14, 2016 Gold River, Calif. - For the second straight season, LMU women's rowing took home third place at the West Coast Conference Rowing Championships held Saturday at Lake Natoma. The Lions scored a total of 27 points, placing third in the Varsity 8 and Second Varsity 8 races. Graduate student Ruth Morris and junior Mireia Ros were honored after the event, each earning a selection to the All-WCC team.
The race's final standings bore a striking resemblance to last year's results as, for the second year in a row, Gonzaga and San Diego finished tied atop the leaderboard with 39 points apiece. As they did in 2015, the Bulldogs edged the Toreros in the Varsity 8 race to break the tie and clinch the conference championship. Gonzaga has now won three of the past four WCC titles. Prior to the season, the trio of Gonzaga, San Diego and LMU were tabbed the top-3 teams in the WCC coaches poll.
LMU began the morning with a sixth-place finish in the Varsity 4, finishing with a time of 8:09.8. San Diego took the event's first race, finishing in 7:18.9, followed by Gonzaga at 7:28.2.
The Lions recovered to record third place finishes in its remaining two races, completing the Second Varsity 8 in 7:05.9, trailing the Toreros (6:40.9) and Bulldogs (6:42.8).
In the Varsity 8, LMU finished with a time of 6:51.7, while Gonzaga (6:25.8) beat out San Diego (6:29.4) for the WCC championship.
2016 marks the third time in four years that LMU has finished third in the conference title event as Portland (22 points), Saint Mary's (22), Creighton (13) and Santa Clara (5) rounded out the championship standings.
