LOS ANGELES - Mattias Markusson, a native of Vasterled, Stockholm, Sweden, has signed a National Letter of Intent to attend and play for the men's basketball program at LMU, announced Head Coach Mike Dunlap on Tuesday.
Markusson, a 7-1 center, has played the last two seasons for Jamtland Basket in Sweden, playing at both the first and second division. Last season in 20 games for the second division he averaged 17.2 points and 12.4 rebounds, hitting 64.4 percent from the field and 2.0 blocks a contest. He played in 61 games in the two seasons in the first division, averaging 5.6 points and 4.2 rebounds a contest this past season.
"We are very excited about this incoming class, and add another piece to our program in Mattias," said Dunlap. "He gives us a true center with great size, obviously at 7-1, and brings national team experience to our roster."
Markusson played at the national team level with Sweden program. He played eight games in 2015 for Sweden at the U-20 European Championships, helping his team win silver. He averaged 7.1 points and 6.1 rebounds per game in that tournament. He played for the U-18 team in the same tournament in 2013 and 2014, helping the team to a sixth place and then a fourth place finishes, respectively.
He was ranked seventh for centers and 33rd overall in Europe by Eurohopes.com for his class.
Markusson joins a class of four newcomers that have committed for the 2016-17 season, including senior Hawaii transfer Stefan Jovanovic, freshman wing Donald Gipson from nearby Fairfax High School, and 6-10 Oregon transfer Trevor Manuel, who joined the Lions in January and will have three seasons of eligibility remaining. Manuel will be eligible as a sophomore following the first semester of 2016-17.
