LOS ANGELES - Alex Finie had a home run in each game and pitchers Hannah Bandimere and Rachael Farrington combined to allow just two runs in a 3-1, 5-1 West Coast Conference doubleheader sweep of Saint Mary's Saturday at Cottrell Field in Moraga.
The two wins move LMU to 30-19 overall and 8-3 in WCC play. The Lions have now reached the 30-win mark for the 14th time in the past 21 years and the first time since 2013.
Farrington got the start in game one, scattering six hits for one earned run in 4.1 innings. With the score knotted at 1-1, the junior lefty gave way for Bandimere, who tossed the final 2.2 innings and was credited for the win as LMU's go-ahead runs came in the top of the sixth.
Finie's first homer of the day gave the Lions a 1-0 lead in the second before the Gaels' evened the score in the bottom of the fifth. But Amanda Dirks would come up big in the sixth as her single up the middle plated pinch runner Stephanie Maciel and Shannon Kent, giving LMU the 3-1 advantage.
Bandimere would close out the final two frames, allowing a pair of hits in the sixth, but forcing three straight outs in the seventh to secure the victory.
The Gaels (18-25-1, 5-6 WCC), would open game two with the early advantage, sending a run home on a wild pitch in the bottom of the second.
But LMU would respond with a four-run fourth, as Maciel tied the game with a solo home run, followed four batters later by a three-run shot by Finie. The Lions would add an insurance, unearned run in the seventh for the final 5-1 spread.
Bandimere (17-10) picked up her second win of the day after tossing four solid innings. The rookie scattered four hits and struck out two while allowing one run. Farrington, who took over for the final three frames, collected her third shutout of the year.
The Lions and Gaels conclude the three-game WCC series on Sunday with a single game set for noon.
