SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Amanda Dirks hit a solo home run in the second inning and Hannah Bandimere tossed her first career shutout as the LMU softball team earned a 1-0 victory over UC Santa Barbara Tuesday afternoon at Campus Diamond.
The Lions improve to 22-14 on the year with their fourth shutout of the season. The Gauchos fall to an even 17-17 overall.
"We really emphasized our goal of working the process today," said Head Coach Sami Strinz-Ward. "The team did a great job of staying present, and of finishing the game. It was nice to win a 1-0 game."
Bandimere threw seven strong innings for her 11th win and eighth complete game. The freshman struck out two, walked one and scattered six hits while never allowing a Gaucho runner past second base.
At the plate, Dirks had two of the Lions' six hits, including the one-out solo shot to center field, as well as a double in the fourth inning.
Meghan von Behren went 2-for-3 and Stephanie Maciel and Stephanie Crist also each had a hit.
"We got some very good pitching by Hannah," added Strinz-Ward. "We also had some great defensive plays, including a couple of key plays by Maciel, and Amanda swung the bat really well."
Gaucho pitcher Ashley Ludlow (5-7) fanned nine LMU batters, walked one and surrendered just the one earned run.
The Lions return to Smith Field Wednesday to close out non-conference action with a doubleheader against Long Beach State. First pitch of game one is set for noon.
