SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Lions could find no answer for Santa Clara's stifling trading zone defense Thursday night at the Leavey Center as the Broncos came away with the 68-41 victory in West Coast Conference women's basketball action.
A slow offensive start for both teams saw LMU (9-18, 5-11 WCC) eventually open up an 11-6 advantage following a Cheyenne Wallace jumper with 2:34 to play in the first quarter. But the Lions would not score again for more than nine minutes as they struggled to solve the Santa Clara defense.
The Broncos (20-6, 11-4 WCC), meanwhile, reeled off 22 unanswered points before a Bree Alford jumper with 3:47 to go in the second quarter. Santa Clara would lead 35-17 at the halftime break and build that advantage to as many as 31 early in the fourth quarter.
Deanna Johnson scored six of her team-high 10 points in the fourth quarter, the lone quarter the Lions would win, 15-13. Mackenzie Cast added eight points and Andee Velasco had six. Velasco also dished seven assists, bringing her season total to 105. That mark breaks the previous LMU freshman single-season record of 99, set by Marlee Webb in 1992-93.
The Lions hit just 32 percent from the field and 23 percent from three, while also struggling with 24 turnovers.
Santa Clara was paced by Taylor Berry who finished with a game-high 15 points. Morgan McGwire and Lori Parkinson added 14 points apiece and Marie Bertholdt chipped in 12. The Broncos finished shooting 49 percent from the field while also hitting 14-of-18 from the charity stripe.
LMU's Bay Area swing concludes on Saturday at San Francisco. Tip off from War Memorial Gym at the Sobrato Center is scheduled for 2 p.m.
