PORTLAND, Ore. - After holding the WCC's top offense in check for 82 minutes, Portland's Erik Edwardson found the back of the net to lead the Pilots past the LMU men's soccer team, 1-0, Friday night at Merlo Field.
LMU (7-8-0, 1-3-0 WCC) and Portland (10-3-1, 4-0-0 WCC) contended in a defensive battle in the opening half as neither team could muster a shot on goal, though the Pilots outshot the Lions, 4-1.
Portland, the lone undefeated team in conference play, broke through in the second half as Eddie Sanchez slipped a past through LMU's back line just outside of the box and Edwardson sneaked a ball into the back right frame from nine yards out to break the deadlock.
Despite holding a 5-4 advantage in shots in the second half, including a 3-1 lead in shots on frame, LMU could not deliver the equalizer and fell, 1-0.
The Lions will stay on the road as they travel to Gonzaga for a 1 p.m. matchup on Sunday.
