MALIBU, Calif. - The final minutes of the fourth quarter proved to be unkind for LMU men's water polo as they suffered a pair of heartbreaking one-goal setbacks on the week. The Lions fell to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Friday at home, 14-13, and then fell to No. 8 Pepperdine, 7-6, Saturday evening.

Both the Waves and the Stags scored with less than two minutes to play in the game to pull out the win in a pair of tough match-ups.

On Friday, Riley Smith broke a 12-12 tie to give the Lions a 13-12 lead over CMS with 3:11 to play. The Stags then scored back-to-back goals, including the game winner by Alex Waggoner with 1:42 to play.

Sophomore Daniel Arellano had six assists in the set-back to add to his WWPA-leading total. Jon Beck led the Lions with four goals.

In the Wells Fargo PCH Cup rematch, the Lions got back-to-back goals from Beck and Dayne Jagga with 1:56 to play in the third quarter to take a 5-4 lead over the Waves.

Pepperdine scored two of their own to take the lead at 6-5 with 7:29 to play in the game. Jagga answered with 5:47 to play to make it 6-6. Both teams couldn't find the net until Mark Urban scored the game winner on the 6-on-5 attack with 1:!3 to play.

Arellano added an assist on the game, giving him 45 on the season. He is now tied with Ikaika Aki for second all-time in LMU history for assists in a single season.

The Lions head to the Rodeo hosted by Santa Cara, playing five games in three days. They open by facing Harvard on Friday at 3 pm.
