Lexi Elman connected for a match-high 26 kills on 59 swings to guide the Pacific volleyball team (10-7, 4-1 WCC) to a 22-25, 27-25, 25-18, 16-25, 15-9 five-set victory over LMU (11-5, 2-2 WCC) on Saturday from the Alex G. Spanos Center in Stockton, Calif.
With the loss, LMU is now 2-8 against the Tigers all time, including 1-6 on the road.
Sarah Sponcil led the attack for LMU, connecting for 18 kills, teaming the mark with 13 digs for her ninth double-double of the year. Freshman Savannah Slattery posted 15 kills, but LMU was out-hit, .248-.224, in the setback. Freshman Jessie Prichard narrowly missed a double-double, combining 37 assists with nine digs.
In addition to Elman's 26, Emily Baptista pitched in 10 kills and Ashlynn Fleming connected for eight while hitting .316 on 19 attacks. The Tigers also received nine service aces, including three apiece from Baptista and Katrin Gotterba. Gotterba led all players with 21 digs. While aces certainly helped push Pacific to victory, the Tigers also managed 14 total team blocks, with Fleming recording three solos and six block assists.
LMU's serving game also proved effective, with the Lions posting seven aces behind three from senior Nicky Kevorken.
While the match as a whole proved fairly close, the winner of each set led virtually the entire way on Saturday, as the two teams played to 17 tie scores, but only three lead changes over the five sets.
LMU will return to action on Thursday when it returns home to host Portland at 7 p.m.
