SAN DIEGO - The LMU women's basketball team concluded a two-game West Coast Conference road swing against the league's co-leaders with an 82-58 setback at San Diego Saturday afternoon.

Against the league-leader in scoring margin, as well as the third highest scoring offense and scoring defense, the Lions (7-13, 3-6 WCC) got down early and could not recover despite playing the Toreros (18-2, 8-1 WCC) near even through the final three frames.

Sophie Taylor led LMU with 13 points to go along with eight boards. Bree Alford posted her fifth double-double of the year, finishing with 10 points and 11 boards. Andee Velasco also chipped in 11 points on 5-of-9 shooting.

Malin Hood led the Toreros with 20 points while sister Maya had 16 points and 11 rebounds. Four total USD players reached double figures.

Turnovers plagued the Lions early with as eight giveaways contributed to a 25-12 deficit. In the second period, LMU slowly found its rhythm while cutting back on turnovers, playing to an even 14-14, but still trailing 39-26 at the break.

Despite finding a bit more offense in the third quarter, LMU could not close the gap and USD would pull away again down the stretch.

The Lions finished the game with 19 turnovers, contributing to a 23-7 points-off-turnovers advantage for the Toreros. LMU did win the battle of the boards, 45-38, including 22 offensive rebounds that turned into a 25-16 second-chance-points advantage.

LMU returns to Gersten Pavilion next week, beginning round two of the 18-game WCC schedule with rematches of this week's opponents. BYU will visit Los Angeles on Thursday, followed by a Saturday rematch with the Toreros.
