BOSTON - LMU men's soccer tallied its third straight win, third straight shutout and third different Lion goal scorer Friday afternoon in Boston. A goal in the 73rd minute by Alvaro Madrigal pushed the Lions past Harvard, 1-0, at Soldiers Field Stadium.
LMU moves to 3-0-0 on the season while Harvard drops to 0-1-0 in its season and home opener. The shutout was the third straight for the Lions and also the 14th in the career of goalkeeper Paul Blanchette, moving the senior in to a tie for the all-time LMU record along with Jerad Bailey (1997-2000). Blanchett finished the match with four saves on 12 total Crimson shots.
Madrigal provided the heroics in the 73rd minute, snapping the scoreless draw with a far-post, right-footed boot from 25 yards out.
The play began up the left flank where Grant Sampson passed the ball back to a central Jose Ochoa. Madrigal began a run up the field to Ochoa's left, and the junior transfer one-touched the ball to Madrigal's feet. The sophomore pushed the ball past a pair of Crimson defenders and towards the top of the box. Finding space 25 yards out, Madrigal launched a shot into the far right post netting.
Harvard finished the match with a slight 12-11 shot advantage, but the Lions produced better opportunities with eight shots on frame.
LMU's East Coast swing concludes Sunday at Boston College. The Lions and Eagles kick off at 12 p.m. local, 9 a.m. Pacific.
