IRVINE, Calif. - A trio of UC Irvine goals scored in the second half could not be matched by the LMU men's soccer team Thursday night as they fell 4-1 to the Anteaters at Anteater Stadium.
The setback put the Lions at 5-4-0 on the season while UC Irvine improved to 2-4-2 overall.
The teams played to a scoreless first half as UCI held a slight 8-6 shot advantage. The Anteaters' Leon Luis and Ivan Canales teamed up in the 51st minute and 64th minute as Luis scored back-to-back goals. Jamie Phillips made it 3-0 in favor of the home team at the 67:30 mark.
Sophomore midfielder Alvaro Madrigal broke the seal for the Lions, converting a penalty kick in the 80th minute for his fourth goal in the last five matches, and fifth total goal on the season.
With the Lions pressing forward late, UCI's Eduardo Calzada added a fourth goal for the final 4-1 spread.
The Lions will be back on Sullivan Field on Sunday, Sept. 27 to host Cal Poly at 4 p.m. In conjunction with LMU's annual Alumni BBQ, all BBQ ticket holders will gain free admission to the Lions' match.
