LOS ANGELES - Fans were treated to a second straight thrilling finish at Sullivan Field by the LMU women's soccer team Friday night. The Lions followed last week's double overtime golden goal win with yet another extra time victory, this time a 1-0 shutout of No. 21 Long Beach State.
Sophomore Jill Farley provided the heroics in the 98th minute, launching a 35-yard shot from the left sideline, over the 49er goalkeeper and into the far post netting.
The win was LMU's fourth straight and moves the Lions to 4-2-0 overall. Long Beach State, which opened the season by stunning then No. 4 UCLA, dropped to 4-2-1.
The victory also marks LMU's first win over a ranked opponent since a 3-0 shutout of then No. 15 Pepperdine on Oct. 15, 2012.
LMU and LBSU played evenly through the first 45 minutes and strong defensive efforts led to a scoreless first half and a slight 4-3 shot advantage for the Lions.
Out of the break LMU went on the offense, claiming a 7-2 shot advantage in the second frame, but were still unable to find the back of the net.
With time winding down in the first golden goal overtime period, the Lions earned a corner kick left of the goal. Jocelyn Blankenship took the kick and opted to play a short ball to Farley. The sophomore defender launched the ball at the far post, catching goalkeeper Ashton McKeown off her line and floated the shot into the back of the net.
The goal was Farley's first of the season and second of her career. Blankenship now has 16 assists for her career, two shy of the LMU all-time record held by Julie Gallaudet (2007-10).
LMU concludes its five-match homestand on Sunday, hosting UC Riverside at 1:30 p.m. The Sunday doubleheader, which concludes with LMU men's soccer hosting New Mexico at 4 p.m., will feature a White-Out T-Shirt Giveaway for all fans, raffle prizes for LMU Students and will feature Westchester AYSO Day at LMU Soccer.
