LOS ANGELES - Adrien Perez broke a scoreless draw with an unassisted goal in the 75th minute and the LMU men's soccer team opened the 2015 season with a 1-0 shutout of visiting San Jose State Friday night at Sullivan Field.
The junior Preseason All-West Coast Conference selection had a match-high five shots, including the game-winner. Just inside the 75-minute mark, Perez pressed forward against the Spartan defense. Perez swiped an attempted pass, faced keeper Emmanuel Espinoza one-on-one, and beat him into the upper left netting.
LMU finished the night with 11 shots, including six on frame, while holding the Spartans to just five chances. Paul Blanchette made three saves in goal for the Lions, notching his 12th career shutout and moving within two of the LMU all-time record of 14 (Jerad Bailey, 1997-00).
The Lions return to action on Sunday, hosting UNLV on Sullivan Field. Kick off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
