SAN BRUNO, Calif. - The race for the West Coast Conference men's soccer crown is expected to be a tight one once again in 2015 as five teams received first place votes in the league's preseason coach's poll. LMU was among those five sides, earning a pair of first-place votes and 35 total points for a fourth-place pick in the eight-team league.
Just seven points separated picks one through five as San Francisco came out on top with two first-place votes and 39 points. Saint Mary's was selected second with one first-place vote and 37 total points. Reigning WCC champion San Diego was picked third with two first-place votes and 36 points. LMU was fourth and Santa Clara was fifth with one first-place vote and 32 points.
LMU junior midfielder Adrien Perez was named to the 11-member Preseason All-WCC team. A two-time first team All-WCC selection, Perez led the Lions and WCC in shots (62) and assists (7) in 2014. He also added five goals for 17 points.
The Lions return 16 letterwinners, including 10 starters from their 2014 squad. They also welcome back three redshirts, including 2013 first team All-WCC selection John McFarlin, and add 11 newcomers.
Following an exhibition match at CSUN on Aug. 22, the Lions officially open the 2015 slate on Aug. 28, hosting San Jose State on Sullivan Field. Kick off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
