LOS ANGELES - LMU men's soccer returned to campus this week to begin preseason training camp for the 2015 season. As is the norm, the squad kicked things off in the weight room with strength testing, followed by an endurance fitness test on the field.

The LMU Sports Network caught up with senior Akio Ohtake-Gordon and freshman Cole Souza following the team's initial testing.

Strength and condition have been a staple of the program and a key point of emphasis for Ohtake-Gordon. "Fitness is a big part of college soccer to stay on the field," said the midfielder who hails from Golden, Colo. "Staying on top of our fitness and following the program that (Strength and Condition Coach) Jack McCormick gives us is really vital."

Souza, a midfielder from Livermore, Calif., has taken point from his upperclassman teammate and is looking forward to the challenge of his upcoming inaugural collegiate season.

The Lions return 16 letter winners and nine total starters from last year's squad that went 9-4-6 overall, matching the program record for fewest losses, most unbeaten matches and goals against average. In addition to 11 newcomers, LMU also welcomes back redshirt-senior John McFarlin, who was sidelined in 2014 with a knee injury. When last on the pitch, McFarlin finished the 2013 season ranked in a tie for third nationally in assists per game (0.61) and tied for fourth with 11 total assists.

The Lions kick off the year with an exhibition match at CSUN on Saturday, Aug. 22, followed by the official season-opener on Saturday, Aug. 28 at 7 p.m. versus San Jose State.
