SAN BRUNO, Calif. - Senior midfielder Jocelyn Blankenship earned her second straight All-West Coast Conference Preseason Team selection Wednesday as the league office released it's women's soccer preseason coaches poll and preseason All-WCC team.
Blankenship, a 2013 and 2014 All-WCC Second Team honoree, was named to the 11-member preseason squad after finishing her junior season with a team-high six assists.
In the highly competitive league that sent three teams to the NCAA Tournament last fall, the Lions were selected seventh in a vote of the 10 head coaches. BYU was a near unanimous selection to repeat as the WCC champion with eight first-place votes and 79 total points. Santa Clara earned two first-place votes and 69 total points, while Pepperdine was picked third with 63 points.
The Lions went 9-8-2 overall and 2-6-1 in WCC play last season with a young squad that featured just three seniors. This year's squad features a wealth of experience and nearly every weapon is back on the pitch. In addition to Blankenship, LMU returns top point-getter Morgan Hilby (5g, 6a) and top goal-scorer Shannon Kent (6g) among 10 total returning starters.
Play begins Saturday, Aug. 15 with an exhibition match at UC Santa Barbara, followed by the official 2015 opener on Friday, Aug. 21 versus Rutgers (at Penn State).
