Lions Take Third, Pair Named All-Conference

The LMU rowing program finished third overall at the WCC Championship on Saturday at the Sacramento State Aquatics Center on Lake Natoma, as the Lions placed third in the Varsity 4 and Varsity 8, and fourth in the Second Varsity 8.

Gonzaga and San Diego each finished with 39 overall points, but Gonzaga was awarded the WCC Championship based on its victory in the Varsity 8 race. The Lions followed with 28 points, while Saint Mary's (25 points), Portland (19 points), Santa Clara (10 points) and Creighton (eight points) rounded out the standings.

The Lions opened the day with a third-place finish in the Varsity 4, turning in a time of 7:46.9. San Diego won the race in 7:25.9, followed by Gonzaga at 7:27.2.

LMU next hit the water in the Second Varsity 8, racing close against Saint Mary's for third place, but eventually finishing in fourth with a time of 7:06.1 to SMC's 7:02.

The Lions secured third place overall in the final standings with a strong effort in the Varsity 8. LMU rowed to a time of 6:41.4 to outrace the Gaels at 6:47.6.

Following the conclusion of the races, Toni Boteva and Louisa Del Valle were named All-West Coast Conference. Boteva was honored for the second straight year, while Del Valle earned her first selection.

The third-place finish is LMU's second in the last three years after earning a tie for third in 2013.
