LOS ANGELES- With day one of the 2015 ZUMO LMU Invitational in the books, the 12th-ranked LMU women's water polo team split a pair of games to improve to 14-8 on the season.
The Lions opened with a 11-8 win over Whittier and then fell to No. 10 Princeton, 11-6. Laura Lopez led the Lions with five goals, scoring a hat-trick against the Tigers. Bridgette Alvarez led LMU with three goals against Whittier.
In the opener, the Lions were tied at 5-5 after a Whiiter goal with 6:02 to play in the third quarter. However, the Lions took control with three straight goals. Lopez scored the first on a 6-on-5 opportunity then Alvarez scored with 1:46 to play.
Kingsley Hill ended the run with a goal to open the fourth quarter, giving the Lions an 8-5 lead. They would keep the Poets at arms length the rest of the way.
Against the Tigers, USA National Team goalie Ashleigh Johnson made 17 saves against the Lions to keep them at bay all afternoon. The Lions trailed 6-1 but managed to cut the lead to 8-5 but would get no closer.
Action continues on Sunday as the Lions face Brown at 10:30 am and then close the tournament against Michigan at 3:30 pm. For full scorers, follow the tournament at the ZUMO LMU Invitational Webpage.
