LOS ANGELES - Rachel Farrington collected a save and a win in the circle and the LMU softball battery totaled 17 hits in a doubleheader sweep of Northwestern State, 4-1 and 8-5, Sunday afternoon at Smith Field.
The Lions improve to 2-1 on the young season while the Lady Demons drop to 0-6.
Alex Finie led the Lions at the plate with a pair of hits in each game. Amanda Dirks also had a big day, finishing with three hits and three RBIs.
Stephanie Crist earned the win in the circle for LMU in the opener, fanning four, walking one and scattering six hits in five innings of work. Farrington pitched the final two innings, striking out two and surrendering one run before closing things out.
The Lions broke open a scoreless affair in the bottom of the fifth on three this and one Lady Demon fielding error. Northwestern State got one run back in the top of the sixth, but a Nicole Kaiser two-RBI single through the left side gave the Lions the three-run cushion.
Dirks' first-inning RBI single in the nightcap put LMU on the board early. The Lady Demons would strike back with a pair of runs in the top of the third, but LMU answered with two runs in the home half of the third, followed by a big four-run fourth.
The Lions added another run in the sixth, opening up an 8-2 advantage heading into the final frame. The Lady Demons made things interesting on a Kellye Kincannon one-out three-run homer in the seventh. Crist would enter in relief for Farrington and immediately get out number two. But walked the next two batters before catching Kayla Boening to strike out swinging for the final out.
The Lions return to action on Friday, Feb. 13, traveling to Tucson, Ariz., for the University of Arizona Hillenbrand Invitational.
