LOS ANGELES - The LMU softball team scored first in its 2015 season opener Saturday morning at Smith Field, but visiting Sacramento State would get the upper hand late as the Lions fell, 4-1.
The Lions went right to work in the bottom of the first beginning with an Alex Finie one-out, single to right. Stephanie Crist then drew a five-pitch walk and Amanda Dirks crushed a double to deep left field, scoring Finie from second.
The Hornets would tie things up in the top of the third as Alexa Chattleton led off with a double to left center, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a Paige Martin single up the middle.
LMU would go hitless through the third, fourth and fifth innings while the Hornets threatened briefly in the fourth, advancing a runner to third. But LMU pitcher Rachael Farrington would get the third out of the inning on a pop up to work out of the jam.
Things finally broke open in the top of the seventh when Martin struck for her second hit, a one-out, three-run homer that gave Sac State a 4-1 advantage. LMU would go three up, three down in the home half of the frame to close things out.
Farrington (0-1) took the loss for LMU after allowing seven hits and two walks in 6.2 innings of work. The Lions finished with four hits, one each by Finie, Dirks, Meghan von Behren and Stephanie Maciel.
LMU is back in action Sunday, hosting Northwestern State in a doubleheader beginning at noon on Smith Field.
