LOS ANGELES - Behind 19 points from senior Sophie Taylor and 18 from sophomore Bree Alford, the LMU women's basketball team was victorious in its first exhibition game of the 2015-16 season, a 64-59 final against Cal State San Bernardino, Tuesday night.
Eleven of 12 suited players saw at least 10 minutes of action for the Lions and eight different players scored.
Playing in the new quarter format implemented for NCAA women's basketball this season, LMU found itself down early, 27-17, but rallied back to outscore the Coyotes 17-7 in the second quarter to take a 34-33 lead into the break.
Four points by Alford and a Leslie Lopez-Wood layup stretched the Lions' lead to seven, 42-35 at the 6:40 mark of the third quarter. The feisty Coyotes rallied back and a three by Brianna Harden cut LMU's lead back to one, 49-48, to close the third quarter.
CSUSB went on to lead 57-52 with 4:42 to play, but Makenzie Cast nailed a three, Chloe Hall made one of two free throws and Taylor sank a jumper to put the lead back in LMU's hands. Chelsea Barnes responded with a jumper, giving the Coyotes a brief 59-58 advantage with 3:26 to go, but Alford responded with a layup of her own and Taylor and Marcella Hughes both sank a pair of free throws in the final minute to secure the victory.
The Lions return to the court Monday, Nov. 9 for their final exhibition game, hosting Bethesda University at 7 p.m. LMU's official season opener is Nov. 14 at Colorado.
