OAHU, Hawaii - In a sloppy game featuring 45 total turnovers and 53 total fouls, poor shooting also plagued the LMU women's basketball team in a 65-51 setback against Hawaii Friday at the Bank of Hawaii Rainbow Wahine Classic.
The Lions (0-3) hit just 28 percent from the field and 23.5 percent from three for the game. NK Ilang led the Lions with 14 points, including 12 in the first half. Sophie Taylor finished with 11 points and seven rebounds while Deanna Johnson added seven points.
Hawaii (3-0) was paced by Connie Morris' 16 points. Sarah Toeing had 13 points off the bench and Destiny King chipped in 12 for the Rainbow Wahine.
After Hawaii scored the first four points of the game, LMU went on a 10-0 run. But the Rainbow Wahine answered with a 9-0 run of their own and the teams eventually closed out the quarter knotted at 17-17. Free throws helped keep the Lions alive as they hit 9-for-12 in the opening 20 minutes, but Hawaii would close out the second quarter on a 9-4 run to carry a 34-26 lead into the break.
The Lions seemed to start to find some momentum in the third quarter, outscoring UH 13-10. But things unravelled in the fourth quarter as shots wouldn't fall and fouls and turnovers were costly.
LMU returns to action at the Bank of Hawaii Rainbow Wahine Classic on Sunday, facing off against Nevada. Tip off is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. HT.
