SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Less than a minute from playing to a 1-1 double overtime draw against No. 25-ranked Santa Clara, the LMU women's soccer team conceded its second goal of the night, dropping a 2-1 decision at Buck Shaw Field Friday night.
The West Coast Conference final puts the Lions at 8-3-1 on the season and 2-1-0 in league play. Santa Clara improves to 8-4-0 overall and 1-1-0 in the WCC.
With time winding down, SCU goalkeeper Andi Tostanoski sent a long punt down the pitch. Megan Crosson collected a pass on the left side of the box and sent in a left footed shot that forced a diving save by LMU goalkeeper Charlee Pruitt. Following the rebound, a misplayed clearance off the foot of Jill Farley found Mariana Galvan, who one-touched the ball into the net.
LMU scored first in the match as Jocelyn Blankenship tallied her WCC-leading sixth goal of the season in the 26th minute. Melissa Lewis built the attack from the left wing, sending a cross into the area. A Bronco defender's short clearance went straight to Blankenship near the top of the box. The senior midfielder took advantage of an open lane, sending a left footed cross-goal shot that nicked the right post and into the net.
Santa Clara's Kellie Peay would respond in the 32nd minute, knotting the score at one apiece.
The setback snapped a nine-match overtime unbeaten streak for the Lions, dating back to the 2012 season. Marking the fourth overtime outing of this season, LMU is now 2-1-1 in extra time in 2015.
The Lions are back in action on Sunday, facing San Francisco at Negoesco Stadium for a 1 p.m. kick off.
