Lions Hit .301 in Sweep of Pacific

Box Score Oct. 31, 2015

Box Score

Senior setter Hannah Tedrow posted a double-double of 41 assists and 14 digs, setting the Lion attack to a .301 hitting percentage, as LMU (17-7, 8-4 WCC) posted a road sweep over Pacific (14-9, 5-7 WCC) by scores of 25-18, 25-21, 25-22 on Saturday from the Alex G. Spanos Center in Stockton, Calif. With the victory, LMU has now won eight of its last nine matches.

Tedrow's leading options on the attack proved to be junior Jamie Lea and sophomore Sarah Sponcil. Lea led all players with 14 kills on 30 swings with just two errors (.400), while Sponcil posted 13 kills on 29 attacks with just two errors (.379). Sponcil also served up one of five team aces, with senior Avery Bush contributing a pair. LMU looked strong on the block in the three-set victory, posting 10 team blocks behind a solo and five block assists from Rachelle Suaava.

The Lions hit better than .300 in each of the first two frames, connecting for a .303 mark in the first behind four kills apiece from Suaava and Sponcil. After surrendering the first point of the match on a Kimmy Whitson kill, LMU rattled off six straight to open up a 6-1 lead. The Tigers never drew back even in the period, as LMU used another late run to put the set out of reach. Leading by just three at 12-9, LMU won the next seven straight points, highlighted by a pair of Suaava kills, to reach 19-9. Pacific would continue to battle down the stretch, but the deficit proved too great, as LMU eventually won the opener on a Lea kill.

LMU's attack continued to flourish in the second, as the Lions connected for a .368 clip behind six kills from Lea, five from Sponcil, and four of Amber Mirabello's six in the match. Mirabello collected the six kills on just 11 swings, finishing with a .455 hitting percentage. The Lion block also registered its best showing of the afternoon in the second, as LMU collected five total team blocks. The two teams played even to 14-14, but LMU won the next three points, including one on a block from Mirabello and Lea, to take a 17-14 lead it would not relinquish. A Tiger attack error pushed the Lions to the 20-point plateau at 20-17 before Lea connected for her final kill of the set to run the tally to 24-21. Jennifer Casillas handed LMU the commanding 2-0 lead in the match score on the ensuing play, finding the floor for the second time in the set.

Though the Lion attack cooled to .219 in the third, it was enough to record the sweep of Pacific on Saturday. Sponcil continued her consistent play in the finale, registering four kills and one ace to guide the Lions to victory. LMU's serving game proved to be the difference in the third, as LMU registered four of its five aces in that period. The Lions never trailed in the third, but did play to four tie scores, including the last at 22-22. LMU controlled the middle of the set, but a late four-point run from Pacific turned a 22-18 LMU advantage into a deadlock at 22. Fortunately for the Lions, Lea followed with a kill to regain the lead, and Lexi Elman erred on an attack to send the match to match-point. Serving for the victory, Suaava dropped back and delivered an ace to hand LMU the sweep.

The Lions will return to action on Thursday when they host Portland at 7 pm in Gersten Pavilion.
