LOS ANGELES - LMU men's water polo used tough defense and a balanced offense to earn their fifth straight victory, defeating 14th-ranked UC San Diego, 12-6, in Western Water Polo Association action on Saturday afternoon at the Burns Aquatics Center.
Seven different Lions scored and goalie Kirk Wilenius finished with 14 saves as the Lions improved to 8-10 overall and 2-1 in the WWPA. They finished with 12 steals in support of Wilenius, including three by Cory McGee. UC San Diego falls to 10-11 overall and 3-1 in conference play.
With the game tied at 3-3, the Lions scored four straight goals to take control. Tyler Testman and Liam Jennis each scored to close out the first quarter. After the break, Jon Beck and Milutin Mitrovic scored the first two goals of the second quarter for the 7-3 lead.
LMU's lead never dropped below three. Mitrovic led the Lions with three goals while Matt Cuozzo and Testman had two each.
The Lions will travel to California Baptist on Thursday, Oct. 29 for another WWPA match-up. Game time in Riverside, Calif., is 7 pm. They will then return home for Santa Clara on Halloween at 12 noon.
