LOS ANGELES - It was a record-setting night at Sullivan Field Friday as the LMU women's soccer team clinched its 10th win of the season - a 1-0 shutout of West Coast Conference rival Portland.
The victory, sealed by a Morgan Hilby first-half goal, gave the Lions their first 10-win season since 2010 and moved them to 4-1-0 in WCC play. But more importantly, the win got a huge monkey off the back of the 23-year-old program, recording its first-ever win over the Pilots.
The eventual game-winner came off a set piece in the 41st minute. After being fouled near the left sideline, senior Jocelyn Blankenship played a quick ball up the line to Jill Farley. The sophomore defender one-touched a centering ball across the goalmouth where an onrushing Hilby used her head to redirect it into the back post net.
Hilby's goal snapped a near 14-year span during which the Lions has not recorded a goal against the Pilots. The last LMU goal scored in the series came in the 2001 season.
The records continued to roll as Blankenship's assist on the goal marked her 18th of her career, tying the LMU all-time record held by Julie Gallaudet (2007-10).
LMU's defense took over in the second half, holding Portland without a shot for the balance of the match. Goalkeeper Charlie Pruitt earned the shutout win, her third clean slate of the season and sixth win overall.
The Lions continue the weekend WCC homestead on Sunday, hosting Gonzaga at 2 p.m.
