LOS ANGELES - LMU men's soccer made it two straight Sunday afternoon at Sullivan Field as a multi-goal effort led to a 3-0 shutout of West Coast Conference rival Portland.
The Lions improve to 7-6-0 overall and 2-1-0 in WCC play while the Pilots fall to 2-9-2 overall and 0-3-0 in league action.
Paul Blanchette anchored the second straight shutout for the Lions, coming up with five big saves for his sixth clean sheet of the season and 17th of his career.
Freshman Cole Souza provided what would stand as the eventual game-winning goal, netting his first collegiate goal in the 15th minute. Covering the weak side on a corner kick by Alvaro Madrigal, Souza rushed onto Madrigal's long drive at the back post and headed it into the net behind Portland goalkeeper Paul Christensen.
Madrigal, the WCC leading scorer, made it 2-0 LMU in the 27th minute sending in a shot through traffic from the top of the box. Madd Gooden began the play with a cross in front he right wing and James Tanaka also earned an assist on the goal, tapping Gooden's cross over to Madrigal.
Neither team generated much offense through most of the second half, but the Lions would finally break through a third time with just eight minutes remaining. Taking a pass from John Bovill up the left flank, freshman Cruz Corral beat his defender to the endline, cut the ball back and sent an angled shot to the far right post.
LMU takes a brief break from WCC action this week, making the long cross-country trip to State College, Pa., for a match-up against Penn State on Oct. 21. The Lions return to WCC action on Oct. 30 at Saint Mary's.
