Oct. 17, 2015 LOS ANGELES -The 17th-ranked LMU men's water polo team continued to show road toughness on the season, defeating 14th-ranked Air Force, 13-10, in a Western Water Polo Association match-up Friday at the Academy's Cadet Natatorium.
The Lions (6-10, 1-1) defeat a top-15 WWPA foe on the road for the second time this season, earning a 13-12 four overtime win at UC San Diego in a non-conference match-up in September.
Senior Vuk Cvetkovic led the Lions with five goals while junior Kirk Wilenius had 10 saves and scored a goal. Seven different Falcons scored for Air Force (6-12, 0-2).
LMU jumped out to a 4-2 lead after the first quarter, including Wilenius hitting a shot from over half-tank at the buzzer. Freshman Dayne Jagga set the tone for the Lions in the middle, scoring two goals.
Cvetkovic would give the Lions the 5-2 lead to start the second quarter. However, Air Force tallied three straight to tie the game at 5-5 with 2:21 to play in the first half.
LMU would then push ahead for good. Matt Cuozzo delivered a momentum changer, scoring with 48 seconds to play to give the Lions a 6-5 lead at the break. They would then add three more for a 9-5 to start the second half, including a pair from senior Milutin Mitrovic.
Air Force scored the final two goals of the third quarter to make it 9-7, but would get no closer. With the score at 10-8, the Lions would score three straight, two by Cvetkovic, to push the lead to 13-8 with 2:17 to play.
The Lions return home for Madness Week to host Concorida on Thursday, Oct. 22 at 3 pm and then rival UC San Diego on Saturday, Oct. 24 at 12 noon.
