LOS ANGELES - Back home on Sullivan Field as the second week of West Coast Conference play got underway, the LMU men's soccer team found a much needed victory, earning a 1-0 shutout of visiting Gonzaga Friday night.
Cruz Corral had the golden boot in the 65th minute, chipping Bulldog goalkeeper Chris Lowrimore, who had come out to the top of the 18-yard box. John McFarlin scored the assist on the goal, sending a long thru ball up to Corral from the midline.
The win snapped a six-match skid for the Lions, who are now an even 6-6-0 on the season and 1-1-0 in WCC play. Gonzaga fell to 6-6-1 overall and 1-1-0 in league action.
Gonzaga seemed to have the edge early, firing big defensive plays by both the LMU back line and goalkeeper Paul Blanchette. The senior collected all five of his saves in the first half, while John Bovill cleared a sixth Zag attempt off the goal line as the teams went into the break tied 0-0.
Luc Brubaker had a shot blocked early in the second half and Alvaro Madrigal sent one wide before Corral put one into the netting at the 64:41 mark.
LMU held Gonzaga to just four second half shots, none on goal, as Blanchette tallied his fifth shutout of the season and LMU record 16th of his career.
The Lions are back in action on Sullivan Field Sunday at 1 p.m., hosting Portland.
