SAN FRANCISCO - Goals by Sarah Sanger and Melissa Lewis, along with four saves by Charlee Pruitt, led to a 2-0 West Coast Conference shutout of San Francisco for the LMU women's soccer team Sunday at Negoesco Stadium.
The Lions improve to 9-4-1 overall and 3-1-0 in WCC play. San Francisco fell to 8-3-3 overall and 2-1-0 in league action.
Bouncing back from a heartbreaking 2-1 double overtime defeat at Santa Clara on Friday, LMU pounced quickly against the Dons, converting their first recorded shot for a goal.
In the 17th minute, Shannon Kent sent a long arcing cross into the box from the left wing where Sanger one-timed it into the net.
With three of Pruitt's four saves coming in the first half, the Lions carried a 1-0 lead into the break. Lewis would double the advantage in the 67th minute, taking a short pass from Morgan Hilby and sending a shot past USF goalkeeper Madalyn Schiffel into the far post.
Despite the Dons earning a 15-9 shot advantage, the Lions' defense held for the balance of the match, collecting their sixth shutout of the season.
LMU takes a week off from competition before returning home to Sullivan Field on Oct. 23 and Oct. 25 to host Portland and Gonzaga, respectively.
