SAN DIEGO - Opening West Coast Conference play against defending league champs San Diego, the LMU men's soccer team suffered a 3-1 defeat Saturday night at Torero Stadium.
USD (5-4-2, 1-0-0 WCC) took hold of the match early, scoring twice in the opening 16 minutes of play. Djordge Babic put the Toreros on the board at the 6:21 mark and Michael Turner, who assisted Babic's goal, doubled the San Diego lead in the 16th minute with an unassisted score.
The Toreros would go on to make it 3-0 on a goal by Torrey Dermas in the 79th minute.
Alvaro Madrigal kept the Lions (5-6-0, 0-1-0 WCC) from being shutout with a penalty kick goal in the 81st minute. The sophomore midfielder now has a team, and league, best six goals for the season.
The Lions will be back in action at Sullivan Field next week, hosting Gonzaga on Friday and Portland on Sunday.
