PORTLAND - Freshman Makenzie Cast scored a career-high 20 points Thursday night at Portland, but the LMU women's basketball team could not slow four Pilots who scored in double figures, settling for an 83-65 setback at the Chiles Center.

A 10-0 Portland (3-14, 1-5 WCC) run midway through the first half opened up a 21-8 deficit for the Lions, one that they would never recover from. Cast poured in 14 points, including four threes, in the first half, but LMU (2-15, 0-6 WCC) hit just a collective 38 percent form the field while the Pilots were hot, hitting 44 percent, including 6-of-9 from three, to take a 46-33 lead into the break.

The Pilots stretched their lead to as many as 29, 69-40, with 9:53 to play in the game. The Lions had a late run in them, trimming the spread to 14, 74-60, on back-to-back Cast threes. But Portland would close out the game hitting 9-of-10 from the charity stripe to seal the win.

Portland's Jasmine Wooton led all scorers with 30 points, hitting 8-of-12 from the field and 12-of-15 from the free-throw line. Cassandra Brown had 22 points and Cassandra Thompson added an 11-point, 12-rebound double-double for the Pilots. Kari Luttinen chipped in 12 points as Portland hit 44 percent from the field and nearly 70 percent from three.

Cast's 20-point effort included six buckets from beyond the arc, matching the second highest single-game output in LMU history. Sophie Taylor joined Cast in double figures, finishing with 13 to go along with a team-high eight rebounds. Emily Ben-Jumbo added 12 points and Leslie Lopez-Wood had a trio of threes for nine points.

LMU's Pacific Northwest road swing concludes on Saturday afternoon in Spokane, Wash., against WCC leader Gonzaga. Tip off from the McCarthey Center is set for 2 p.m.
