PROVO, Utah - Putting together its most complete game as a unit, LMU men's basketball put BYU in the position to need a season-high 13 three-pointers to pull out an 85-72 win at the Marriott Center on Saturday night in West Coast Conference action.

"We showed a lot of guts tonight," said Head Coach Mike Dunlap. "We kept coming back at them. It was our best game as a unit of the season, as evidence by our 18 assists."

The Lions had five players in double figures for the first-time since Dec. 17, 2013, had the most assists this season against a Division-I opponent and earned career highs of 16 points and eight rebounds from Marin Mornar.

Joining Mornar in double figures was Godwin Okonji with 14, David Humphries with a career-high 12, while Ayodeji Egbeyemi and Matt Hayes had 11 each. Chase Flint returned to his home state to lead the Lions with eight assists with just one turnover. In the last three games he has 19 assists and just two turnovers.

Tyler Haws led all scorers with 26 points, but hit just one of BYU's 13 three pointers. Chase Fischer had 19 points, hitting 5-for-8 from three. Anson Winder had 15, going 3-for-9 from three. BYU (14-5, 4-2) finished 28-for-55 from the field (50.9 percent), hitting the 13 three-pointers on 25 attempts (44.8 percent).

The Lions (4-13, 0-5) went 7-for-14 from long range, getting a 3-for-3 effort from Hayes. The Lions finished 27-for-60 from the field (45 percent).

BYU came out on fire, hitting back-to-back three-pointers to start the game on their way to a 10-0 lead. The Cougars had over half of their three-pointers (seven) in the first 10 minutes of the game and they led by 16, 40-24, after Winder hit a three-pointer with 7:19 to play.

The Lions didn't go away, cutting the lead to eight on a three-point play by Mornar. A fitting three-pointer at the end of the half left the score at 47-36 entering the break.

"I think they thought they had us buried a couple times, but we just kept coming back," said Dunlap. "We really battled and it was a heck of a game for both sides. They are so good at finding the open three in the first eight seconds of the possession and they really hurt us with that early. We did a good job of adjusting and forcing them deeper in the shot clock in the second half."

Haws scored the first bucket of the second half to make it a 13-point lead. However, the Lions scored seven unanswered to make it 49-43 with 16:14 to play on a Humphries jumper.

"We tried to slow them down and did a good job of that when we came back," said Dunlap. "We showed a lot of fight."

The Lions would cut the lead to four on a pair of free throw from Okonji with 14:37 to play and then again by another pair from Okonji with 13:51 on the clock, making it 53-49.

The Cougars would finally get some separation with a 13-0 run over the next four minutes, taking a 66-49 lead on a Fischer three-pointer with 9:46 to play.

LMU kept coming, cutting the lead to single digits several times. They cut it to seven, 69-62, on back-to-back three-pointers by Hayes and then again at eight,76-68, on another pair of free throws from Okonji.

However, the Lions would get no closer.

Leading scorer Evan Payne, who entered the day second in the WCC in scoring, was not in uniform for the game on a coach's decision.

LMU returns home on Thursday, Jan. 15 to face Portland at 7 pm. The game is part of Homecoming Week on campus with special events and giveaways slated for both games, including a black jersey giveaway for the Homecoming game against Gonzaga on Jan. 17.
