SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Sarah Sanger scored her first collegiate goal 39 seconds into the second overtime period Sunday night, leading the LMU women's soccer team to a 2-1 win over UC Santa Barbara at Meredith Field at Harder Stadium.
The Lions moved to 3-1-1 on the season with the win while the Gauchos dropped to 2-3-1.
Neither team was able to get much going offensively in the early goings as each side finished the first half with just three shots apiece.
But it would be Nikki Martino to get the Lions on the board just three minutes before the break, netting her first goal in an LMU uniform. The sophomore striker collected a ball on the left flank, attacked her defender with a quick cut into the box and sent a long right-footed shot to the far post.
The Gauchos would counter just two minutes into the second period when Dakota Griggs struck for her second goal of the year off a free kick opportunity.
Sanger would finally snap the tie less than one minute into the second sudden victory overtime period. The rookie took a long through ball, beat her defender and the UCSB goalkeeper before tapping the ball into the open net.
LMU finished with six shots, including three on goal, while the Gauchos had 10 total opportunities.
The Lions return to Sullivan Field on Sunday, Sept. 14, hosting Cal State Fullerton at 4 p.m.
