LOS ANGELES - Shannon Kent scored her third goal in as many games, leading the LMU women's soccer team to a 1-0 shutout of CSUN in the Lions' final non-conference match of the season.
LMU moved to 7-2-1 overall, having won five of its last six heading into West Coast Conference play this week. CSUN dropped to 3-7-1 on the year with their second straight setback.
Kent's lone goal midway through the first half was all the Lions would need as they outshot the Matadors 14-8. Just one CSUN shot was on frame, forcing one diving save by Sophia Leksan.
Just inside the 22nd minute mark, Morgan Hilby passed a ball through the right side of the 18 up to Nikki Martino on the end line. Martino sent a low ball across the goalmouth for Kent who one-touched it to the left of CSUN goalkeeper Jovani McCaskill.
McCaskill kept her side in the game with seven saves, including three in the second half, but the Lions' defense continuously broke up CSUN's possession on their way to their fourth shutout of the year.
LMU opens WCC play at home this week, hosting San Francisco on Friday, Oct. 3 and Santa Clara on Sunday, Oct. 5.
