LOS ANGELES - Morgan Hilby snapped a 1-1 tie with a pair of goals in the final 10 minutes of play to lift the LMU women's soccer team to a 3-1 victory over visiting Weber State Friday night at Sullivan Field.
The Lions remained undefeated at home with the victory, moving to 4-0 on Sullivan Field and 5-1-1 on the season. The win was also the third straight for the Lions. Weber State dropped to 3-5-0 overall.
The Lions pounced early, jumping on the board in the ninth minute of play. Jocelyn Blankenship had her shot from 10 yards out blocked by a Weber State defender but Cassidy Nicks was right there for the rebound, knocking the ball past the reach of goalkeeper Sydnie Stokes.
Weber State would eventually net the equalizer in the 73rd minute, catching LMU on its heals with a long lofting shot by Stacy Blair that went over the reach of goalkeeper Sophia Leksan.
The lull in energy would not last long for the Lions as Hilby singlehandedly brought the squad back to life. In the 82nd minute, Hilby collected a long through ball up the middle of the field and beat Stokes 1-v-1 with a slotted shot into the net. Callie Taylor was credited with the assist on the play as the Lions reclaimed the lead, 2-1.
Less than three minutes later, Hilby struck again, this time heading in a shot off a corner kick from Blankenship for the insurance goal and a 3-1 advantage.
LMU finished the night with a 13-6 shot edge. Stokes made five saves for Weber State while Leksan had two.
The Lions look to take the momentum from this win up to Westwood Sunday night when they face defending national champs and current No. 1 ranked UCLA. Kick off at Drake Stadium is scheduled for 6 p.m.
