LOS ANGELES - Connor Hunsicker scored his first goal of the season and the LMU men's soccer team held on for a1-0 shutout of visiting Colgate Sunday afternoon at Sullivan Field.
It was the second straight victory for the Lions who move to 2-1-2 on the year. The Raiders fell to 1-3-1.
LMU dominated the flow of the match and held strong for their second shutout of the season despite playing without the services of center backs Craig Nitti and Ryan Felix, and central midfielder John McFarlin. The Lions earned a 13-7 shot edge, including a 10-4 advantage in the first half.
Sebastian De Rada nearly put the Lions on the board in the 22nd minute when he took a pass up middle from Leon Prikhodovskiy, turned and struck a shot from 10 yards out. but the ball flicked just high off the crossbar, leaving the teams deadlocked.
Seven minutes later, Hunsicker would score off a rebound following a blocked shot attempt by Mark Dotseth, putting LMU on top, 1-0.
De Rada had another fantastic opportunity in the second half, nearly making it 2-0 on a hard-hit volley from 10 yards out. But he was turned away by Raider goalkeeper Ricky Brown, who finished the day with four saves.
Vince Paldino picked up his second win, and shutout, of the year, making four saves of his own.
The Lions return to action Thursday, Sept. 18, hosting UC Irvine in a 7 p.m. tilt at Sullivan Field.
