LOS ANGELES - For the second match in a row, freshman Sarah Sanger came up big when it mattered most. The rookie who hails from Bellflower, Calif., scored her second consecutive double-overtime game winning goal, giving the LMU women's soccer team a 1-0 win over Cal State Fullerton Sunday afternoon on Sullivan Field.
Exactly one week ago, Sanger scored her first collegiate goal 39 seconds into the second 10-minute overtime period to lift LMU past UC Santa Barbara, 2-1. This time, she would score with just 1:06 remaining in the period.
Jocelyn Blankenhsip got the play going, forcing a Titan turnover in the Lions' end. She would work the ball out to the right flank and Morgan Hilby, who sent a long ball up the line to a streaking Sanger. Sanger carried the ball upfield, cut into the box and beat CSUF goalkeeper Jennifer Staurt with a slotted shot to the far post.
With their second straight double overtime victory, the Lions move to 4-1-1 overall while Cal State Fullerton drops to 1-5-2.
Staurt finished with a pair of saves for the Titans while Sophia Leksan had four saves in her third shutout of the season.
LMU returns to action on Friday, Sept. 19, hosting Weber State in a 7 p.m. tilt at Sullivan Field.
