Junior Colin Welmon earned the final West Coast Conference Pitcher of the Week selection of the year on Monday after turning in a stellar start at Pacific on Friday. For Welmon, the selection was the second of the season (March 24) and third of his career (May 14, 2012).
Welmon tossed his second complete-game shutout of the year, and the third of his career, on Friday night at Pacific, guiding LMU to a 4-0 victory over the Tigers at Klein Family Field. His first complete-game shutout of the year also came in WCC play at BYU on April 17. The complete game was his third of the year and the fifth of his career, including his second in as many starts after going the distance against Pepperdine on May 2.
In his start against the Tigers, the native of Tustin, Calif. allowed just five hits and no walks while striking out four over the nine shutout frames. He needed just 99 pitches to complete the game, and he faced just one over the minimum the rest of the way after allowing a leadoff double in the third. With the victory, Welmon improved to 9-2 on the year, and 7-1 in the WCC.
LMU will carry the #2 seed into the West Coast Conference Championship Tournament on Thursday. The Lions will open play against Gonzaga at 7 pm from Banner Island Ballpark in Stockton, Calif.
