MORAGA, Calif. - The LMU softball team opened its first season of West Coast Conference play at Saint Mary's Saturday, dropping a pair of games, 6-1 and 2-1.
The Lions (19-16, 0-2) scored first in both games of the doubleheader, but the Gaels (14-17, 2-0) would twice rally late, including a walk-off RBI-hit in the nightcap.
Meghan Harman scored the Lions' lone run in the opener, leading off the second inning with a single, advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt, to third on a ground out and scoring on a passed ball. Harman had one of LMU's six hits in the game as Stephanie Crist led the way with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate.
The Gaels scored a pair of runs in the third off of LMU starter Sydney Gouveia (12-2). They would add four more in the sixth off of relief pitcher Rachael Farrington.
In the nightcap, freshman Alex Finie put the Lions on the board in the fourth with a leadoff home run to center field. Finie finished a perfect 3-for-3 while four other Lions collected one hit apiece.
Farrington would keep the Gaels off the board until the final frame as Saint Mary's pushed a pair of unearned runs across home plate.
The two teams are back in action Sunday, wrapping up their WCC opening series with a single game at noon.
