LOS ANGELES - The LMU women's basketball team closed out the home portion of their 2013-14 slate Saturday afternoon with a 91-67 setback to visiting BYU.
Lion seniors Hazel Ramirez, Mackenzie Kerins, Melinda Gomez and Alexis Love were honored in a pre game ceremony prior to their final appearance in Gersten Pavilion. Ramirez would finish the day with 22 points and a pair of assists while sophomore Deanna Johnson led LMU with 23 points.
BYU (23-5, 13-4 WCC) was led by Kim Beeston's career-high 27 points, including 21 in the first half on a perfect 7-of-7 from three. Jennifer Hamson had 23 points to go along with 19 rebounds as four Cougars reached double figures.
A back-and-forth battle early, the Lions (8-19, 5-12 WCC) used a 7-0 run capped by a pair of Ramirez free throws to trim a 10-point deficit down to just three, 22-19, with 9:35 to play in the first half. Led by Beeston, the Cougars would pull away in the final 10 minutes of the half, outscoring LMU 34-10 to carry a 56-29 advantage into the break.
Early in the second half, Ramirez and Johnson combined for a 14-2 run, capped by seven straight Ramirez points, to cut the deficit down to 14, 62-48, with 14:55 to play. But the Lions would get no closer as BYU held on down the stretch.
LMU hits the road for its final pair of regular-season WCC games, traveling to Santa Clara and San Francisco on Feb. 28 and Mar. 1.
