LOS ANGELES - Struggling to find its offensive threat for the second straight outing, the LMU women's soccer team suffered a 2-0 setback to visiting Santa Clara Sunday afternoon at Sullivan Field.
The Lions (7-4-1, 0-2-0 WCC) surrendered one goal in each half to the Broncos (8-5-0, 1-1-0 WCC) and finished with just two shots in the match.
LMU was without the services of Morgan Hilby and Sarah Sanger for the second straight outing and was able to go only three deep not he bench while the Broncos subbed freely the entire match as 20 players saw action on the hot afternoon in Los Angeles.
West Coast Conference scoring leader Sophia Huerta put Santa Clara on the board in the 30th minute, sending a long, lofting shot from the top left corner of the box into the far post netting.
Despite 17 total shots from the Broncos, LMU's defense held strong, keeping within striking distance until the final minutes of play. This time, Huerta played setup man, crossing in a ball to Mariana Galvan who beat LMU goalkeeper Sophia Leksan one-on-one from six yards out, giving SCU a 2-0 cushion with under three ticks to play.
Leksan finished with five saves for the Lions while sisters Brianne Medved and Maddie Maddie Medved accounted for LMU's two shot opportunities.
WCC play continues on the road this coming week for the Lions as they travel to face Pacific on Friday and Saint Mary's on Sunday.
