LOS ANGELES - Playing without a pair of their biggest offensive threats, the LMU women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to visitant San Francisco Friday night at Sullivan Field in both sides' West Coast Conference opener.
It was just the first setback of the season for the Lions at Sullivan Field as they fell to 7-3-1 overall and 0-1-0 in league play. The Dons improved to 5-5-2 overall and 1-0-0 in the WCC.
LMU was without the services of Morgan Hilby and Sarah Sanger, who combined for four goals and four assists through the non-conference portion of the schedule, due to injury and the offense lagged without them. The Lions finished with five shots on the night, all of them coming in the second half.
Goalkeeper Sophia Leksan made four first-half saves as the teams went into the break scoreless, 0-0.
The Dons would break through just 10 minutes into the second half, however, as Mackenzie Krieser one touched a cross from the right flank from Abigail Phillips into the net.
LMU's best chance to find the equalizer came in the 66th minute as Shannon Kent and Keala Parker-Lee sent back-to-back shots at the USF goal. But goalkeeper Madalyn Schiffel turned both away, hew only saves of the night, to preserve the shutout.
The Lions are back in action on Sunday, hosting Santa Clara at 1 p.m. at Sullivan Field.
