Once again playing without its leading attacker in
Caitlin DeWitt, the LMU women's volleyball team fell to 17-5, including 5-5 in West Coast Conference play, on Saturday, suffering a sweep at the hands of San Diego (15-7, 8-2 WCC) on the road by scores of 25-16, 25-20, 25-17.
Alaysia Brown led the way for the Toreros, collecting 13 kills on 28 swings for a .321 hitting percentage. Canace Finley was huge on the block for USD, registering two solos and six block assists to guide the Toreros to 14 total team blocks. Lisa Kramer teamed with Finley to make it tough on the Lions, as Kramer had two solos and five block assists of her own. Jianna Bonomi, who split time setting the attack, collected a double-double of 13 assists and 11 digs to accompany three of San Diego's five aces.
Senior Litara Keil and junior Amber Mirabello proved to be the bright spots for the Lions on the attack, as Keil collected 11 kills to Mirabello's eight. LMU did manage six team blocks, including three block assists apiece from Keil and junior Rachelle Suaava.
LMU hit just .080 over the course of the match, including .029 and -.024 in the first and third, respectively. San Diego proved fairly consistent on the attack, posting .273, .273 and .143 clips, in that order. The home team also registered four blocks in the first and second sets before finishing the sweep with six in the third.
Although LMU never led in the second set, the Lions turned in their best performance in the stanza, hitting .237 with two blocks. Keil collected seven of her 11 match kills in the second, doing so on 10 errorless attacks.
LMU will look to get back on track and snap a three-match skid on Thursday when it welcomes Gonzaga to Gersten Pavilion for a 7 pm match.
