LMU senior tennis player Felix Van Kann won the Consolation Final of Flight A at the UCSB Classic last weekend. Freshman Jamie Thorp also competed in singles play, while the pair reached the Consolation Final of doubles competition.

Van Kann opened competition with a loss to Tobias Galskov of UCSB, 3-6, 6-0, 6-4, before falling into the Consolation bracket. There, the native of Frankfurt, Germany defeated Nikhil Jayashanker of Cal by a close score of 3-6, 6-4, 7-6. The semifinal match featured Van Kann and Philip Kuenen of Grand Canyon, as the Lion defeated the Lope, 3-6, 6-1, 7-6, to advance to the final. In another three-set match, Van Kann defeated UCSB's Teague Hamilton for the Consolation Title by scores of 1-6, 6-4, 6-2.

Thorp fell in his first-round match against Wyatt Houghton of Cal, 6-1, 6-0, before dropping a decision to Felix Schueller of Grand Canyon, 6-4, 6-1. The Kent, Wash. native led 5-1 in the first set of a match against Naveen Beasley of Cal Poly, but was forced to retire due to an apparent injury.

As a doubles team, Van Kann and Thorp split the first two matches, falling 8-4 to Nishimura/Melton of Cal before defeating Porutiu/Luu of UC San Diego, 8-6, to reach the Consolation Final. Unfortunately Thorp was unable to compete, as the duo lost by default to Bacharach/Maltby of UC Davis.

LMU will now prepare for the ITA Regionals held at Pepperdine starting on Friday.
