MORAGA, Calif. - The LMU women's soccer team completed its first West Coast Conference road swing of the season with a 2-2 double overtime draw at Saint Mary's Sunday, remaining unbeaten on the weekend.
The Lions moved to 8-4-2 overall and 1-2-1 in WCC play. The Gaels played to their second straight double overtime draw and now sit at 6-7-2 overall and 0-2-2 in league action.
Morgan Hilby gave the Lions a 1-0 lead headed into the break, finding the back of the net for the second straight game. In the 41st minute, the Lions earned a free kick opportunity following a SMC foul. Jocelyn Blankenship played a short ball to Maddie Medved who sent a long cross into the box where Hilby redirected it into the net with her head.
Saint Mary's would find the equalizer in the 62nd minute, but the Lions would jump back on top at the 72:55 mark. Sarah Sanger sent a ball into the box for Shannon Kent who beat Gaels' goalkeeper Stephanie Busch one-on-one for the 2-1 LMU advantage.
The Gaels responded once again as Vicki Shimkus recorded her second assist and Samantha Dion made it 2-2 in her 86th minute goal.
LMU earned a 4-1 shot advantage in the two periods of overtime, but could not come away with the game winner. The Lions' best chance to snap the tie came in the 93rd minute when they were awarded a penalty kick attempt following a Saint Mary's foul in the box. But Busch came up with a huge block save on Blankenship's shot and two follow-up attempts rimmed off the post as the Gaels escaped the flurry.
The Lions return to Sullivan Field on Saturday, Oct. 18, hosting BYU at 7 p.m.
