SAN DIEGO - LMU men's soccer stretched its unbeaten streak to four straight Friday night with a 1-0 shutout of West Coast Conference rival San Diego at Torero Stadium.
The Lions move to 5-3-3 on the season with the non-conference counting victory while San Diego drops to 4-4-4 overall.
Sebastian De Rada provided the breakthrough for LMU in the 67th minute of play, netting his third strike of the season that would stand as the game-winner on the night. The senior went on the attack, but a USD defender poked the ball away to break up the play. The dispossession went to the feet of Jonathan McLouth who one-touched it back to De Rada who broke through the last line of defense and beat Torero goalkeeper Thomas Olsen with a shot into the lower right corner of the net.
San Diego would have four shot attempts down the stretch, looking for the equalizer. But two attempts sailed high and two were stopped by goalkeeper Paul Blanchette, preserving the fourth shutout of the season for LMU.
Blanchette and Olsen each finished with five saves on the night while San Diego held a slight 14-11 shot advantage. The teams will meet again, this time in a WCC counting match, in the season's final regular-season match on Nov. 15 at Sullivan Field.
The Lions return to Sullivan Field to close out non-conference play on Tuesday, oct. 14 versus UC Santa Barbara. Kick off is set for 7 p.m.
