LOS ANGELES -- The 13th-ranked LMU men's water polo team opened the 2013 season with a split in day one of the UC San Diego Triton Invitational, defeating Cal Lutheran 21-8 then falling to the defending champion and top-ranked USC Trojans.
Senior John Mikuzis had five goals in the win to start the day and sophomore Milutin Mitrovic had five goals on the day, leading the team with a pair against the defending champs. The Lions start the year 1-1.
The Lions jumped out to an 11-1 lead at halftime to cruise to the win over Cal Lutheran. Against the Trojans the Lions trailed 8-4 at halftime but saw USC score seven goals in the third period to pull away.
The second day of the UCSD Triton Invitational will see the Lions take on No. 4 Cal at 9:30 am, followed by No. 6 Long Beach St. at 3 pm.
