MORAGA, Calif. — No. 11 LMU defeated No. 20 Saint Mary's 12-10 on Friday. The Lions scored on 12 of their 24 shots and held the Gaels to 10 goals on 34 shots.
The Lions opened the scoring on
Bence Barics' goal at 4:23 of the first quarter, and after Saint Mary's answered at 3:07,
Soren Martin at 2:53 and
Roman Saroyan at 0:21 gave the Lions back-to-back goals to close the first quarter.
Luka Dimic converted on the power play at 7:23 of the second quarter before Saint Mary's put together consecutive goals, and
Gabrijel Burburan scored for the Lions at 2:46. After Saint Mary's scored at 5:40 of the third quarter, the Lions recorded four straight goals — Burburan at 5:28, Martin at 2:52,
Caden Poulleau at 1:53 and Saroyan at 1:20 — then added Martin's goal at 7:03 of the fourth quarter for a five-goal stretch. Saint Mary's answered with two fourth-quarter goals before
Jake Bonavia scored for the Lions at 3:59, and Saint Mary's later added three consecutive goals before Burburan's finish at 1:33. The Lions finished with 12 goals on 24 shots, while Saint Mary's scored 10 times on 34 shots, with each team converting two power-play opportunities.
Burburan scored three goals on four shots and added a steal. Martin finished with three goals, one assist and one field block. Saroyan recorded two goals and two assists on three shots.
Pablo De Souza posted 16 saves and collected two steals.
LMU is 11-6 overall, 2-0 in West Coast Conference play and is ranked No. 11 nationally. Saint Mary's is 5-8 overall and is ranked No. 20 nationally.
