NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - A late Cal State Northridge goal spoiled a potential comeback for the LMU women's soccer team Friday night as the Lions fell 2-1 to the Matadors in their final non-conference game of the 2013 season.
The Matadors (5-6-0) struck first in the match, grabbing the lead less than four minutes in on a goal by Brittanie Sakajian.
The 1-0 score stood until the 55th minute when LMU's Jocelyn Blankenship earned possession off of a Matador turnover and launched a shot from 25 yards out into the top left corner of the netting.
Despite a game-high six shots by Blankenship, it would be CSUN's Lyndsey Preston who would break the 1-1 tie with her first goal of the season in teh 72nd minute.
LMU had a handful of quality opportunities down the stretch as it again looked for the equalizer, but Darien Pyka had a shot blocked, Tawni Martino sailed one just wide and CSUN goalkeeper Cynthia Tafoya came up with a pair of saves on shots by Carolyn Dunn and Brianne Medved.
The Lions (3-8-0) will take a full two weeks off from competition before beginning West Coast Conference play on Friday, Oct. 11 when they host Portland under the lights at Sullivan Field.
